In this section, we will see the steps to configure VPN on a Windows 7 machine.
- Right click on Network icon on the system tray (as seen below).
- That will open up the following window
- Select Open Network and Sharing Center. That will bring up a dialog with following content
- Select Set up a new connection or network. That will bring up the following dialog.
- Select Connect to a workplace and Click on Next. That will bring up the following dialog
- Select No, create a new connection and Click on Next. That will bring up the following dialog.
- Select Use my Internet connection (VPN) to proceed. That will bring up the following dialog.
- Enter the Rainmail Server IP (or) Host name in the Internet address: field. The parameter can be obtained from your Rainmail Administrator and should be resolvable from Internet.
- Specify a descriptive name for connection in the Destination Name edit field.
- Check the Don't connect now, just set it up so I can connect later box.
- Click on Next to proceed. That will bring up the following dialog.
- Enter the VPN user name (provided by Rainmail Administrator) in the User name edit field.
- Enter the VPN password (provided by Rainmail Administrator) in Password edit field.
- Check Remember this password box. Click on Create button. That will bring up the following dialog.
- Click on Close button to close the above window.
- Find out from your Rainmail Administrator what protocol is used for VPN. If PPTP is used, your VPN configuration is complete and the connection is ready to use.
- If IPSec is used for your organization VPN, we need to set some additional parameters before the connection can be used. In that case, follow the steps below
- Click on Network icon on the system tray (as seen below).
- That will bring up the following window.
- Right click on the newly created VPN Connection and click on Properties. In the dialog that comes up, click on Security tab. That will bring up the following
- Select Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol with IPSec (L2TP/IPSec) option for Type of VPN. Click on Advanced Settings.That will bring up the following:
- Check Use pre-shared key for authentication and enter the pre-shared key given by Rainmail Administrator in the Key Edit field. Click on OK to close the dialog.
- Click on OK to close the VPN properties dialog.
- Now your VPN connection is ready to use.
